China and the US should work closely to launch and promote the dialogue mechanism established by Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump during their meeting in Florida, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said when he met US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Friday.
The meeting in New York between the two top diplomats was held on the sidelines of a UN Security Council ministerial meeting on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.
China and the US have initiated a four-pronged dialogue mechanism covering economy, diplomacy and security, law enforcement and cyber-security, as well as social and cultural issues. The two sides should work together to advance the mechanism for more common views while managing the existing disparities, so as to ensure the stable development of bilateral relations, Wang said.
Wang said the close communication between President Xi and President Trump plays a leading role in the development of China-US relations. Their meeting at the Mar-a-Lago resort has set an active tone for bilateral cooperation and sent a strong message of peace to the world.
Wang also said both sides should be well prepared for Trump’s visit to China this year.
Wang and Tillerson exchanged views on escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula, saying the current situation is a challenge. Both sides reaffirmed the goal of denuclearization of the peninsula and pledged to implement UN resolutions strictly. They urged the easing of tensions through dialogue and negotiation.
Tillerson said the two sides have started constructive cooperation aimed at‍ solving the DPRK nuclear situation and other international issues. The US looks forward to high-level dialogue with China to promote cooperation and communication.
