Mbira, one of Zimbabwe's local musical instrument, dating back more than 1,000 years, has gained much of the popularity and enjoy more airplay today than it has ever before.
The unmistakable sound of the Mbira, once underground, is witnessing a mainstream resurgence. It has entertained, soothed and inspired for generations and was also a symbol of resistance during the colonial era.
A mbira consists of 22 to 28 iron keys mounted on a hard word soundboard. It's sometimes decorated with a calabash resonator, which not only amplifies the sound but is also an adaptable canvas for art.
Some purists argue that due to the influence of technology modern music is become a bit generic, musicians here through this proudly and loudly Zimbabwean instrument are creating their own distinctive sound. A sound that's influencing and capturing the imagination of a growing number of global listeners. CGTN’s Farai Mwakutuya has the story.
