The US House of Representatives on Monday passed legislation in a 394-1 vote that would order the State Department to determine whether the DPRK should be relisted as a state sponsor of terrorism.
The measure, together with another resolution condemning Pyongyang’s development of multiple intercontinental ballistic missiles, came after the DPRK launched a ballistic missile test in February.
The DPRK was delisted as a state sponsor of terrorism in 2008 by George W. Bush’s administration, after the designation made by the US government in 1988 in response to the DPRK's 1987 bombing of Korean Air Flight 858.
The consequence of the relisting will be a ban on arms-related exports and sales, restrictions on foreign assistance and financial sanctions.
Earlier on Monday, the DPRK Foreign Ministry voiced its strong opposition to US sanctions, saying its anti-DPRK actions “are driving the tense situation on the Korean peninsula to the brink of a war,” Korean Central News Agency reported citing an unnamed ministry spokesperson on Monday.
“The world will soon witness what eventful steps the DPRK will take to frustrate the hideous and reckless sanctions racket,” the spokesman said.
