The United States is facing a government shutdown. Senate Democrats signaled their reluctance to support a deal that would keep funding federal agencies beyond midnight Friday. This wouldn't be the first time this happened.
In 2013, Congress failed to agree on a budget after Republican lawmakers pushed to de-fund "Obamacare". It stopped nearly 800-thousand federal employees from working.
Disputes between Congress and former President Bill Clinton, over funding for medicare and education in the 1996 federal budget led to two shut-downs. The first put another 800-thousand out of work, the second nearly 300-thousand.
And in 1990, former President George H.W. Bush refused to sign any continuing resolution into law unless it was paired with his deficit reduction plan, and backed up the pledge by vetoing one that made it to his desk. The House failed to override his veto and 28-hundred workers were told to stay home.
