Australia's Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull suggested closing a controversial detention center on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea by the end of this year.
He said this after meeting with his Papua New Guinea counterpart Peter O’Neill on Saturday to discuss how to resettle asylum seekers who will not be accepted by the United States under a controversial deal.
The fate of more than 850 asylum seekers living at the center remains unclear. President Donald Trump earlier refused to honor a deal to take in 1,000 refugees from Australia. Canberra denies asylum to anyone who tries to reach Australia by boat.
