In central Japan, one person has been killed and 15 others injured from an avalanche which is believed to have been set off by an erupting volcano at a ski resort. According to officials, five of the injured plus the man who died were members of Japan's Ground Self Defence Force and were participating in winter training manoeuvres. Some were reportedly hit by volcanic rocks. Meanwhile, in the country's capital, Tokyo, trapped vehicles had to be dug out after more than 20 centimetres of snow fell on the city. More transport disruptions are expected.
