Yang Liwei, the first Chinese national sent to space, has been awarded the UNESCO Medal on Space Science.
The award was established on June 29th this year to honor scientists, public figures, and organizations, for their contributions to the development of space science.
Besides Yang, Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman to travel to space, Arnaldo Tamayo Mendez, the first Cuban to go into space, and Koichi Wakata, the first Japanese commander of the International Space Station, were also awarded at the first edition of the ceremony taking place in Paris.
