World Economic Forum 2018: Merkel: Protectionism not world economic solution
[]
German Chancellor Angela Merkel says protectionism is not the answer to the world's economic problems. She told the World Economic Forum that she's trying to ensure a prosperous future for Germany and Europe.
ANGELA MERKEL GERMAN CHANCELLOR "The question is not what I can distribute what of the common will, but how can I ensure the prosperity for the future. And I know that if we are actually going to fulfill that promise of prosperity for all in the future as well in this new digital world, we need social market economy for that all, not only in industry for that all. And that means we are also going to deal with the question of how can we draw others into the fold, not leave them behind. That's important for all those countries, countries that are split and fractured, that are not able to act in this cooperative world. That's a great danger inward looking and be left behind. All of these questions are linked to what's happening in Germany, but also what's happening in Europe.  All of these problems can only be solved if we look at India, China these giants, can only be solved by cooperation in the European Union. And it's interesting, although it's regrettable that the citizens of United Kingdom have opted for leaving the European Union. At the same time, this has almost encouraged us to focus on the big issues."
