The Italian region of Lombardy is the country's industrial engine and the home of the nation's financial hub Milan. This Sunday, voters there will decide on more autonomy. Local politicians who once campaigned for independence hope this move will lure more investors.

 

Lombardy has been a rival to Catalonia in attracting employees fleeing the United Kingdom due to Brexit. The two regions are also competing to host Europe's drugs regulator, which must leave the UK for a new home inside the European Union.
