In 1937, Nanjing, then served as China's capital, experienced its darkest time in history. Over 300 thousand Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers were slaughtered in cold blood.
During the six-week massacre, Japanese soldiers committed indescribable atrocities, too numerous to record. More than 20 thousand women were sexually assaulted. Many were gang-raped, including young girls. The city was burned and razed to the ground. One third of its buildings were completely destroyed. The "Rape of Nanjing" is one of the worst atrocities of World War Two, and is often compared to the German Holocaust. Nazi Germany's largest concentration camp, Auschwitz, methodically executed over 1 million people. The death camp even invented gas chambers to efficiently carry out mass killings. Many Auschwitz prisoners were even subjected to barbaric medical experiments.
