The World Health Organization has called on the international community to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to Yemen, as the nation struggles to contain another deadly outbreak of cholera.
The Yemeni Health Ministry said on Sunday that the latest outbreak had killed nearly 480 people, one third of whom were children. The epidemic was first found in the capital Sanaa in April, and in only one month it has spread across most of the country. As of May 24, there have been more than 38,000 reported cases.
Years of war have collapsed Yemen's health care system and infrastructure. According to a UN humanitarian coordinator, Yemen needs at least 55 million US dollars to get back on its feet to address the public health crisis.
