The death toll from a road collapse in south China has risen to 10, with one still missing. The accident, which also injured 9 people, occurred at a construction site in Guangdong Province's Foshan city. Wang Yuan has the details.
The ground gave way on Wednesday night, right above the construction site of Foshans' subway line two. The area has been sealed for search and rescue.
Eight people have died and three are missing. Nine workers were rescued. The hospital banned all TV crews and interviews out of safety concerns.
The area has been sealed for search and rescue.
An official report says there was a water leak in an underground tunnel. An area the size of two basketball courts sunk to a depth of 6 meters.
Foshan is in the industrial heartland of South China's Guangdong province. The construction site is in a central area of the city beneath an eight-lane highway.
The line under construction runs for 23 kilometers and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2019.
The rapid expansion of subway networks in Chinese cities has frequently led to cave-ins and other deadly incidents. While China has made considerable progress in improving industrial safety, there's still more to be done to workplace safety.
