Samsung Corruption Case: Ruling due today on Samsung scion Lee Jae-yong's appeal

A South Korean appeals court will rule on Samsung Group chief Lee Jae-yong's conviction and jail term in a corruption case today. The 49-year-old Samsung Electronics vice chairman was found guilty on counts including bribery, embezzlement and concealment of illegal proceeds. He was sentenced to five years in prison last August. Lee is believed to have bribed former president Park Geun-hye and her confidante Choi Soon-sil. The scandal led to Park's removal from office last year. Park is standing trial on multiple counts and has been detained since March. Prosecutors said Samsung sought government support for a controversial 2015 merger of two of its affiliates through bribery. Lee's case will go to the Supreme Court regardless of today's verdict.
