India and Pakistan are expected to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, according to a memorandum signed on the 2016 Tashkent summit, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Monday.
Legal procedures are underway based on the memorandum, said Hua Chunying, spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It is hoped that India and Pakistan will work with others to make contributions to the joint development and maintenance of regional security and prosperity, Hua stated at the press conference.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which focuses on regional cooperation, was founded in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
