Chinese embassy unveiled in Sao Tome and Principe

‍A ceremony to mark the unveiling of the Chinese embassy in the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Príncipe was held in the capital city Sao Tome on Monday. 
The Charge d'Affaires ad Interim of the Chinese embassy Wang Wei and Sao Tome and Principe Foreign Minister Urbino Botelho unveiled the nameplate, in a ceremony which was witnessed by around 200 people.

"The restoration of diplomatic relations between China and Sao Tome and Principe is in line with the fundamental interests of the two countries and two peoples. China attaches great importance to the relationship with Sao Tome and Principe and is willing to deepen all-round pragmatic cooperation with the country on the basis of the one-China principle.” said Wang in his speech.

Botelho stated, the embassy of São Tomé and Príncipe in Beijing would soon be established, and Sao Tome and Principe is honored to be among the countries that have ambassadorial level diplomatic relation with China. Botelho said he looked forward to seeing his country benefit from cooperation with China.

Sao Tome and Principe, an island nation in the Gulf of Guinea and a former Portuguese colony, established diplomatic relations with China immediately after gaining independence in 1975, but switched to the Taiwan region in 1997.
On December 26, 2016, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Sao Tome and Principe counterpart Urbino Botelho held talks in Beijing, and signed a joint communique on resuming diplomatic relations, after the African nation cut "diplomatic ties" with the Taiwan region on December 20.
