Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said on Tuesday the government will not seek legislation for a second independence referendum immediately until the terms of Britain's EU exit are clear.
Scots voted against independence by 55 to 45 percent in 2014, but Sturgeon has argued the Brexit vote changed the circumstances because Scots voted overwhelmingly against leaving the EU and they should not be dragged out against their will.
Sturgeon's words came after UK Prime Minister Theresa May said Scotland should take a demand for a second independence referendum off the table.
May added that she thought it was the time for the UK to pull together, not be driven apart.
