China has strengthened efforts to preserve ecological balance since the CPC's 18th National Congress in 2012. The National Bureau of Statistics says among the 338 monitored cities, 24.9% achieved the air quality standard in 2016, 3.3% higher than that of 2015; with the PM 2.5 level 6% lower than last year.
Meanwhile, energy consumption per unit of GDP value continued to fall last year, down 17.9 percent from the year 2012, as a result of the country's efforts to make energy use more efficient and at the same time, reduce pollution.
China's water resources last year were used more efficiently in terms of water consumption per unit of GDP, dropping by 25.3 percent from 2012. And afforestation areas expanded about 7.2 million hectares last year, 28.7% more than in 2012.
