The C919, China's largest passenger jet, is designed with the world's most advanced technology. It took ten years in the making and let's take a look at what makes it competitive in the world market.
The new Chinese C919 passenger jet is a high performance plane ready to compete with the industry standard Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.
CAI JUN C919 CAPTAIN "We want a plane that is easy to handle. It's just like a car. We want a plane with good performance. I think C919 is very close to aircraft of the similar types."
The C919's name is meant to convey its status to the world. C for China The number 9 is pronounced "Jiu" in Chinese, meaning "Long Lasting". And 19 for the 190 seat capacity in its largest configuration. The new narrow body jet is 38.9 meters long, nearly 12 meters high with a wingspan of 35.8 meters. The C919 has a range of 5,555 kilometers with a top speed of about a thousand kilometers per hour. It can fly at an altitude of 12,100 meters.
Aerodynamically-designed wings made from advanced metals and composites help with fuel efficiency while reducing noise levels in the cabin. The cockpit has the latest navigation technology and so-called "fly by wire" computer controls to help the pilots fly the high-tech plane. These specifications make it competitive with other narrow body jets.
QIAN JIN C919 OBSERVER "If the audience insists in knowing whether our homegrown large passenger jet can match those giants from the U.S. and Europe, as a veteran I can assure them that the C919 was designed at a high level from the very start, at standards up to the world's most advanced technology in terms of aviation and manufacturing. You can trust it."
Ten years in the making, the C919's impact will likely be felt for decades to come.
