NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal has attended the inauguration ceremony of the construction of his statue at the Staples Center on Friday. The monument depicts the NBA legend delivering a thundering dunk on the court, one of the signature moves of his playing career.
Many of Shaq’s former Los Angeles Lakers teammates attended the ceremony, including Kobe Bryant. From 2000 to 2002, Shaq and Kobe, known as the “OK” combination, led the Lakers to three consecutive NBA championships. Despite falling out in 2004, the two stars later buried the hatchet at the NBA all-star weekend in 2009.
In a speech, Shaq expressed his gratitude to and love for the Lakers. He said that Lakers legends James Worthy and Wilt Chamberlain also deserved a statue like his. He also praised Jerry West who brought him to Los Angeles, and Kobe Bryant, whom Shaq said would soon have his own statue at the Staples Center.
