We open up with tennis, and quarter-final action from the Australian Open. World Number one Rafael Nadal, playing Marin Cilic. The Spaniard has been in good form in Melbourne, dropping just one set, and has not been hampered by a bothersome knee that limited him to just one match of preparation time. But it was another injury that would flare up against the Croat, who was looking to beat the 16-time major winner for the first time since 2009.
Rafael is receiving serve at the top of your screen, leading 4-3, and rips a passing shot by the big Croatian en route to taking the opening frame 6-3.
The sixth seed returns the favor in the second, with a big powerful forehand that lands in, he takes the set by the same 6-3 count.
Opening game of the third, and Rafael has to show some good court awareness to get this ball that clips the net, and then gets the backhand stab volley.
This frame needs a tiebreak -- and it is the world number one serving leading 6-5, and he puts pressure on Cilic, and that allows him to smash home this winner, and takes the set, and leads 2-1 overall.
But then asks for a medical timeout as he needs his upper quad looked at.
And he seems to be hampered, as Cilic rolls to a win in the fourth set, clinching a 6-2 triumph with an easy forehand winner.
Off to the decider, and Rafael trailing 1-love and is not moving around the court like he usually does, the former US Open champ controlling this point and firing a winner into the corner, while the Spaniard is definitely in pain.
On the next point, Cilic whips a winner crosscourt that Nadal cannot reach, and that would be it. The pain apparently too much to handle as he retires from the match, trailing 2-love in the fifth, as he walks off the court. Cilic sheepishly celebrates, as Nadal given a standing ovation. The Croat is into his first Aussie Open semi, but both players talked about the injury after, with Nadal wondering if too much is asked of tennis players.
