Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says the country has agreed on the abdication of Emperor Akihito. The date has been set for April 30th in 2019. The next-in-line to the throne is Crown Prince Naruhito.
The 82-year-old emperor has been treated for cancer and heart problems in recent years.
He cited his age and failing health in expressing concerns about fulfilling his role, his heavy travel commitments and his ability "to stand by the people". Emperor Akihito's abdication will be the imperial family's first in over two centuries of Japanese history. The imperial family is believed to be the world's oldest.
