Thousands of sand martins nestle in burrows they made with their beaks on a 30-meter-high cliff in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province. /VCG Photo

The birds migrate there every year to build nests, mate and hatch their eggs. In the autumn, when the baby birds are grown, they continue their journey south. /VCG Photo

The cliff was meant to be destroyed for a natural gas project. But after consideration, the company has suspended the project to protect the lives of its inhabitants. /VCG Photo

An adjusted construction plan is now underway. The local wetland management station has also set up warning signs and arranged personnel to patrol the site. /VCG Photo
