“Growing Pains” actor Alan Thicke, TV’s favorite 80s’ sitcom dad, died last Tuesday in Los Angeles of a heart attack, aged 69, media reports said. Fellow actors and “Growing Pains” co-stars, including Leonardo DiCaprio, paid tribute to the Canadian, who charmed a generation of TV viewers as far as China as father-of-four Jason Seaver on the TV show. His son, “Blurred Lines” singer Robin Thicke, called him “the greatest man I ever met.” In China, where “Growing Pains” was one of the first US sitcoms to air in the 1990s, fans lit virtual candles on social media i remembrance of the actor.

Another high-profile death was Hungarian-born actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, who starred in John Huston’s 1952 film “Moulin Rouge” but was probably best known for her colorful life away from the big screen, including her nine marriages. Her husband Frederic von Anhalt said she died of a heart attack on Sunday at her home in Los Angeles.

Acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yimou’s mega-production “The Great Wall” lived up to its name over its opening weekend, taking in 67.48 million US dollars at the Chinese box office over four days. A historical fantasy featuring monsters and big special effects, the film was pegged as a major US-China collaboration but courted controversy over its casting of Matt Damon, a non-Chinese actor, in a Chinese story. Critics have given it mixed reviews. This is the first English-language film for Zhang, whose previous work includes “Hero,” “The House of Flying Daggers,” and the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. “The Great Wall” is due for release in the US on February 17.

He’s played a boxer, a paid killer and has been nominated for two Oscars. Now, could Sylvester Stallone join US President-elect Donald Trump’s team? Trump advisers revealed last week that they had approached the “Rocky” and “Rambo” star about an arts job, with some suggesting he could be named as chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. Stallone later released a statement saying he was flattered. He did not rule out a role in Trump’s administration but said he “could be more effective” working with veterans. Stallone already raised eyebrows earlier this year when he told Variety magazine “I love Donald Trump… he’s a great Dickensian character.”
