China has never been ruled by a religious power; rather, the country promotes religious harmony. One religion may best answer why the cultural concept of harmony dominates - Taoism. 
It's an ancient religion that’s had a profound impact on the whole of Chinese culture and society. Tao means "the way". The religion evolved from the philosophy of Laozi, who lived in the 6th Century B.C.
