In South Africa, politically motivated clashes broke out in Johannesburg on Monday. Supporters of Jacob Zuma led a march to the ruling party's headquarters, calling for the president to be allowed to serve out his term. But a rival group of ANC members prevented the protesters from reaching their destination. CGTN's Yolisa Njamela was there.
The opposing groups clashed on the streets of Johannesburg, just outside the ANC headquarters - Luthuli House.
A movement known as Black First, Land First wants President Jacob Zuma to be allowed to finish his term, which ends in 2019.
ABIE LETSOALO GAUTENG LEADER, BLACK FIRST LAND FIRST "What we see that's happening here, you find that there are internal agents which have infiltrated the ANC to sway them away from the radical economic transformation. Our message is clear; the president will stay in office until his term is finished."
A counter-march -- organised by ANC members from across South Africa -- prevented the group from getting too close to Luthuli House.
LELE SEKETE COUNTER-MARCH ORGANISER, ANC GAUTENG "If they want to bring their memorandum precisely because they have a preference of comrade Zuma, we don't have a problem with them supporting and loving president Zuma but they should be taking their memorandum to the Union Buildings. We just from the national conference of the ANC that has elected the newly elected NEC led by comrade Cyril Ramaphosa so we believe from where we stand that this is a direct attack to the current leadership."
Black First, Land First managed to hand over the memorandum to the ANC secretary general Ace Magashule. But Magashule had to run for safety when some ANC members called him a sell-out for accepting the document.
YOLISA NJAMELA JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA "The Zuma issue has divided many in this country into pro and anti Zuma factions. Zuma is under increasing pressure from some in the ANC, civil society, and opposition parties to resign before the state of the nation address on February 8."
Meanwhile, the ANC's national working committee has been summoned to a special meeting here at Luthuli House. It follows one between Zuma and the ANC's top leadership on Sunday night. ANC members are expected to discuss Zuma's future and reportedly pressure him to step down as head of state. Yolisa Njamela, CGTN, Johannesburg, South Africa.
