The new season of Chinese basketball is about to begin after former Beijing Ducks point guard Stephon Marbury joined Beijing Rural Commercial Bank Club, also known as the Beikong Fly Dragons in July. The club has undergone major changes in players and coaches. Now the 40-year-old, two time NBA all-star is aiming to establish his new team's place in the CBA. Mike Fox has the story.
The Beijing Rural Commercial Bank Club has changed 10 players this season, the biggest change in the league. Former CBA All-Star Ding Wei joined the club as the main coach in May, Zhang Degui from Fujian, SBS Sturgeons is now the assistant coach, and Ding has his own judgment for this almost brand new team.
DING WEI BEIKONG FLY DRAGONS COACH "As the coach I have to know how to put the new players together and make good use of their strengths. What we are doing now is building teamwork. In a strategic system, teamwork is the most important thing in basketball. "
For that purpose, taking in Stephon Marbury and using his experience on the court and his professional attitude, personal ability, is a quick way to help establish the team. On the other hand, Marbury's fans in Beijing will be happy to see him on home side again.
STEPHON MARBURY BEIKONG FLY DRAGONS GUARD "I feel good about it, it's really positive, it's another opportunity to help another organization establish themselves inside of a very tough league. So for me I'm excited about the challenge and the new season. "
DING WEI BEIKONG FLY DRAGONS COACH "For four years in the CBA, he has been leading the Beijing Ducks, taking home 3 league titles. For any team, it's easy to build the strategic tactic, but it's very difficult to establish momentum to overwhelm the opponents. We need a guy like Marbury to lead the team on the court."
Aside from Marbury, the other two foreign players, former Liaoning player Shavlik Randolph and Former Fujian player Zaid Abbass, both have experience in the CBA play offs.
STEPHON MARBURY THREE-TIME CBA CHAMPION "They know how to play basketball so it makes it easy to get on the court and play with them. You just adjust. For me it's easy to figure out what they like as a point guard experience."
In the new season, the Beijing Fly Dragon will continue to use the National Olympic Sports Center as their home court. They will face Jiangsu Tongxi Monkey Kingon, their coach's former employer, on December 28th in the first round. Mike Fox, CGTN.
