Shandong Luneng superstar Graziano Pelle is now among the world's highest earning footballers. His decision to play in the Chinese Super League (CSL) came at a cost however, as the forward was initially criticized for the move, with many believing it would influence his future with the Italian national team.

CGTN’s Mike Fox (@mikefoxCGTN) sat down with the 31-year-old to discuss that decision, and what it could mean for his career with the Azzuri.

The Italian first made a name for himself playing for Dutch side Feyenoord, where he scored 50 times in 57 appearances. He then made the move to the English Premier League, where he would have a successful stint with Southampton. Seizing the opportunity in England, and also putting on successful performances for Italy at an international level and at Euro 2016, Pelle's hard work helped pave the road to China.

“The important time was the Premier League, it was the best competition at the moment, and maybe it still is. After that I knew if I can do well, there’s a chance to reach the national team,” Pelle said.

“It’s a big change, in every way. Football, coach, language, a lot of things, but I like to think positively,” the Italian said, speaking about his time in China. “I like to open my mind to different people and actually the club has been very helpful. They will help me when I need them,” the Italian added.

His biggest fan, with no surprise, is his girlfriend Viktoria Varga. The Hungarian has always been at his side during their time together and has garnered quite the attention. Despite Pelle's superstar status, Varga isn't doing too bad herself, arguably having more fans in China than her footballer boyfriend.

“They say that!” Viktoria Varga laughed, commenting on her fame in China. “I think it’s because I may have more time to post and I have more pictures to post, and he’s not the type of guy who goes around taking pictures. So maybe that’s why. But I mean, he does the hard work right now. I’m sure he has more fans, they're just not on Weibo. But I’m very happy for the people that love me and follow me,” said Varga.

In order to get more involved with both team, community and country, the couple have decided to learn Chinese, a language most foreigners find very difficult.

“I'm always thankful for joining this club, it was an important moment in my life and also my career. After Euro 2016, I had many offers, but I thought this would be the best decision and I’m very happy to come here,” Pelle said.

On the subject of returning to the Italian national team, Pelle said, “Italian people are very proud people, they like to select players that are in the major leagues. I had my chance with the national team and it was amazing. If I will be needed, I will always be open to it. But right now isn’t the right moment to say if I will be back. But we will see.”
