The standoff with the DPRK continues as the US makes major moves to deploy its THAAD missile defense system to the Korean Peninsula. This week, US President Trump sat down with Reuters and warned, “There’s a chance that we could end up having a major, major conflict.”
Meanwhile, Donald Trump is celebrating one hundred days in office, despite mixed reviews. Supporters of the US president give him a 94 percent approval rating, according to a recent Washington Post/ABC poll. But his overall approval rating still hovers around 40 percent, indicating deep divisions among the American people.

Tian Wei, host of World Insight on CGTN, said it’s only common for countries to seek relationships based on national interests. China is sophisticated enough to understand that, and that the Trump on show during his election campaign was different compared to the Trump now who is president, and has a whole set of issues to consider.
It’s understandable, said Tian, that he switched from an apparent foe to an apparent friend, talking about a closer relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
That should be encouraged, because if the two presidents can better understand each other, it will be good for the bilateral relationship, said Tian.
In terms of confusion over the THAAD deployment and Trump asking South Korea to pay for the system, Tian Wei said that Moon Jae-in, the candidate from South Korea's Democratic Party, has proposed that THAAD is not deployed before the new president enters office.
