Biggest Entertainment Stories: Mega acquisition & scandal shaking Hollywood
[]
2017 started off with a shocker in Hollywood, but then things got a lot worse as the year went on. Besides the sex scandals, throw in a mega-deal between two media giants and the year ended as one of the most memorable in recent history. CGTN's May Lee has the entertainment year in review.
Remember this huge mishap at the Oscars in early 2017.
JORDAN HOROWITZ PRODUCER, LA LA LAND "There's a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won Best Picture. This is not a joke."
At the time, that blunder seemed like the worst thing that could EVER happen in Hollywood. Boy, were we wrong. No story rocked the entertainment business to its core more than American film producer Harvey Weinstein.
SHARON WAXMAN EDITOR IN CHIEF, THE WRAP "I have to say just from a cultural perspective this is one of the biggest stories of our lifetime."
Long before the Weinstein story was blown wide open, Sharon Waxman tried to report on the powerful producer's alleged sexual improprieties back in 2004 when she worked for The New York Times, but the newspaper gutted her story.
It wasn't until October of 2017 when multiple alleged victims, many of them high-profile celebrities, stepped forward to publicly accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment and full blown assault. Waxman interviewed many accusers.
SHARON WAXMAN EDITOR IN CHIEF, THE WRAP "They say 'I thought I was the only one', they said 'I thought it would never happen again.' They say 'no one is going to believe me'. They say 'my husband, my manager, my agent, my partner told me, don't say anything. Keep your mouth shut.' So that's ended." "It really does show you the impact that Hollywood has on the world that entertainment figures and the impact that popular culture and mass entertainment has."
That Hollywood impact was and still is being felt far and wide. The list of prominent figures in media, business and politics who have been brought down by accusations of sexual harassment has been growing.
Actor Kevin Spacey, TV journalists Charlie Rose and Matt Lauer, celebrity chef Mario Batali, music producer Russell Simmons, senator Al Franken, failed senate nominee Roy Moore, just to name a few.
But there is a silver lining that this is the tipping point that will eventually end the culture of abusive powerful men. Near the close of 2017 came another earth-shaking event in entertainment, Disney's $52.4 billion buyout of most of 21st Century Fox's assets.
Disney's move helps beef up its strategy to launch streaming services, which require a variety of content and platforms. Fox assets include a big film and TV library, a majority stake in Hulu and satellite services in Europe and Asia.
BOB IGER CEO & CHAIRMAN, WALT DISNEY "We love what they've been able to do in terms of delivering content to consumers, both in Europe and parts of Asia and India. We like the idea of being able to control Hulu through this acquisition and providing consumers with more opportunities to access great content under compelling experiences in the United States, and we love the brands that we're buying and the combination of their brands with ours."
The proposed mega-deal needs government approval. Regulators will likely investigate antitrust concerns. The process could take up to a year.
MAY LEE HOLLYWOOD "As for the year ahead in entertainment, well, insiders predict there will be more mergers and acquisitions leading to less competition, which could have a negative impact on consumers. The industry is also bracing for more fallout from sexual harassment scandals in Hollywood and beyond, but many hope that will lead, not only, to more awareness, but also significant opportunities for women in the entertainment industry.
