The 2017 Hong Kong election has brought to an end speculation over who will hold the office of the fifth-term chief executive, with the winner named the head of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) or leader of the SAR government.
Former chief secretary Carrie Lam garnered 777 of 1,163 valid votes, becoming the first female Hong Kong chief executive in history.
Asked by CGTN's anchor Zou Yue whether Carrie Lam's victory was a surprise, current affairs commentator Victor Gao said he is not surprised, because Lam has a solid background and experience as a very capable civil servant in Hong Kong.
