The Chinese mainland said on Friday that there is no space for ambiguity in the nature of cross-Strait relations.

An Fengshan, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said due to Taiwan authorities’ refusal to endorse the 1992 Consensus, the Democratic Progressive Party undermined the common political foundation for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.  He said 2016 had seen major changes in cross-Strait relations, resulting in increasing tensions, the loss of past achievements in the peaceful development of relations, and damage to the interests of compatriots on both sides of the Strait.

He also affirmed that the Chinese mainland will stick to the one-China principle, uphold the 1992 Consensus, and will not tolerate any attempts of a separate Taiwan from the Chinese mainland.
