The UN Security Council on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution--the Resolution 2375--to impose fresh sanctions on the Democratilc People's Republic of Korea. This was over the nuclear test on September 3rd, in violation of previous Security Council resolutions. 2375 has the strongest sanctions ever wielded on the country. At a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said China expects the resolution to be put in place in a comprehensive way.

GENG SHUANG, SPOKESMAN CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY "The parallel-track approach and the suspension-for-suspension initiative are China's proposal in light of the current situation on the Peninsula and reasonable concerns of all parties involved, with the aim to thoroughly solve the Peninsula issue in a peaceful manner. This proposal addresses both the symptoms and the root causes, and is rational and reasonable. We hope that parties involved actively back China's effort to work for the reconciliation of the parties and push for peace talks."

Geng Shuang said China has emphasized many times that additional sanctions alone cannot resolve the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, and it's dialogue and consultation that serve the fundamental way out. He noted Resolution 2375 imposes the new sanctions and firmly upholds the international non-proliferation regime. Geng Shuang said it also emphasizes peaceful settlement through dialogue and consultation, and calls for the resumption of the six-party talks.
