The future of Mosul: What's left after ISIL's gone?

Bitter fighting continues in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul between government forces and ISIL militants. Hundreds of thousands of residents have been forced to flee the western half of the war-torn city. On the eastern side however, some semblance of normal life has returned, after dozens of neighborhoods were recaptured nearly two months ago.
There are still visible signs of ISIL’s occupation of eastern Mosul, however people are back on the streets and life has returned to some level of normality. But just across the Tigris river, huge plumes of smoke rise up in the sky and the sounds of automatic gunfire echo out.
Questions remain about the future of Mosul, and what will be left after ISIL is gone remains unclear.
