Thousands of people have been flocking to the Indian city of Varanasi to celebrate Dev Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.

Devotees place earthen lamps on the banks of the Ganges, as they believe gods descend to Earth and bathe in the river on this day. The Dev Diwali festival takes place on the full moon day of the month of Kartika in the Hindu calender, which overlaps October and November. It marks the end of the fortnight of Diwali celebrations.
