Rakhine Unrest: Profile of Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army
[]
The Myanmar government says the group that started the violence on August 25th are a terrorist organization, called the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, or ARSA, and it claims to operate on behalf of Myanmar's minority Rohingya group. It operates in northern state of Rakhine, and aims to "defend, salvage and protect" the Rohingya against state repression "in line with the principle of self-defence". In a report, the International Crisis Group, or ICG, reported that ARSA started recruitment in 2013. Though it denies it's a terror organization, its members are trained by killing informers. The report says many young Rohingya men who are angered by the state have joined ARSA.
