Iran Protests: Timeline of how the unrest developed across the nation
[]
It's been nearly a week since the protests began in Iran. Here is a brief timeline of how the situation unfolded.
The wave of demonstrations started in Iran's second largest city Mashhad on December 28 last year, initially to protest high living costs. Larger-scale protests flared up the next day in more cities, turning against the Islamic regime as a whole.
On December 30, Iran's interior minister called on people to avoid "illegal gatherings" as "they will create problems for themselves".
However, the protests continued to grow leading to more deaths and arrests. The death toll included six who died Monday in a town in the central province of Isfahan, where protesters had tried to storm a police station.
Iranian state television also reported Monday that armed protesters had tried to take over police stations and military bases but faced serious resistance from security forces.
