Syria: Explainer of Regional Powers
[]
So who controls what in Syria? How are various world powers exerting their influence on the war-torn country?
Syrian government forces are backed by Russia and Iran - they've seized more than 60 percent of the country. Major cities such as Damascus and Aleppo are under their control.
The United States backs the Syrian Kurdish forces - they control around 30 percent of Syria, mostly in the north along the border with Turkey.
Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar support various Islamist militants. They are now mostly confined to Idlib province.
And the Islamic State controls the rest of the territory. Their land has been sharply reduced since Syria declared victory against the terrorist group last year.
