The Long Museum in Xuhui is hosting a solo exhibition of one of China's best known sculptors. 48-year-old Xiang Jing was born in Beijing but spent nearly a decade living and working in Shanghai. The show "Xiang Jing: Through No One's Eyes But My Own" showcases her works over the past 21 years. Huang Yuanqing reports.
The show includes more than 100 pieces set up as five thematic series. Among them, a more than 6 meter tall sculpture named "The Open" is a very special piece to Xiang, who says it marks the full stop of her exploration into the issue of female gender.
XIANG JING SCULPTOR "This piece conveys the meaning of greatness, signifies the attitude of being open to the outside world. For me, 'The Open' is almost like a conclusion of the series 'Naked Beyond Skin' since I felt like I've accomplished my mission of exploring the topic of female gender after I created that piece."
The works often depict women without hair, forcing viewers to think about the figure's psychological state instead of focusing strictly on beauty.
JONATHAN FINEBERG ART HISTORIAN "What's so moving to me about all of her work is the authenticity of what she does. You feel that she's really thinking in an extraordinarily vivid and honest way about what means to be her at the moment that she's making each work."
The exhibition will run until February 25th. Xiang's work have been exhibited in the United States, Germany, Japan, Italy and Britain. Huang Yuanqing, ICS FOR CGTN, SHANGHAI
