With less than a month to the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games, preparations for the event are in their final stages. Those visiting will be greeted by a new terminal at the country's main airport. Our reporter Shane Hahm takes a look around the new multi-billion dollar addition.
Kim Jin-ok is going on a scuba diving trip to Japan. Flying out of Incheon International Airport, Kim is among the first travelers to depart this new terminal. So far checking-in has been stress free, using the automated kiosks.
KIM JIN-OK AIRLINE TRAVELER "I was amazed coming here on the first day. It was comfortable getting here on the airport train and it was quick. I'm not sure if it's because the terminals are divided now, but people seem more relaxed. I like it."
It cost four-and-a-half billion dollars ($4.5 billion) to build Terminal 2. Five-stories high, it covers nearly 700,000 square meters. State-of-the-art facilities with smart technologies can be found everywhere. Roaming robots are on hand with airport information. Full body scanners and automated boarding systems help speed up the airport's operations. Hungry travelers can choose from a wide variety of options, from the trendiest fast food joints to a Michelin star-rated chef restaurant.
KIM MIN-JEONG MANAGER, INCHEON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT CORPORATION "With the opening of Terminal 2 today, passenger processing has increased from 54 million to 72 million passengers a year. And cargo handling has increased to 4.5 to 5 million tons. Through this expansion, not just locals, but foreigners will be able to use the airport more conveniently and faster."
SHANE HAHM INCHEON "The ceiling patterns in this new terminal were inspired by an ancient Korean mythological bird symbolizing luck and nobility. In addition, verdant gardens and streams have been infused throughout the terminal to make the airport experience for travelers more pleasant and enjoyable."
The new terminal opens just in time for the 2018 Winter Olympics. Visitors can get to the competition venues by shuttle bus or bullet train directly from the airport.
KIM MIN-JEONG MANAGER, INCHEON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT CORPORATION "We put a lot of thought into linking Terminal 2 to public transportation. The transportation center connects to buses and the KTX bullet train. It will be especially convenient for visitors traveling to the Pyeongchang Olympics."
Incheon International Airport has received numerous international awards since it first opened in 2001. With the opening of this new terminal, it could well be in line for more. Shane Hahm, CGTN, Incheon, South Korea.
