Leaders of 27 European Union countries on Saturday marked the 60th anniversary of the bloc's founding by renewing their commitment to a common future.
Against a backdrop of crises and in the absence of the departing Britain, the leaders signed a new Rome declaration, six decades after the six founding members signed the Treaty of Rome and gave birth to the European Economic Community.‍
Meanwhile, around 30,000 protesters were expected to take part in four separate marches -- both pro- and anti-Europe -- throughout the day in the Italian capital amid a heavy police presence, while rallies were also held in other European capitals.
"I was a girl during the war and this grand European movement has become my political ideal," said one French woman at a pro-EU protest in Rome.
At another rally, demonstrators called for a better Europe. “In some ways, things haven't gone as the founders planned. So we are here today on the occasion of the anniversary to remember this idea of a better Europe for all," said one Italian protester.
