Tunisia has been working hard to revive its struggling tourism sector after terror attacks two years ago which caused 80 percent of the hotels on the country's coast to shut down.
Back in 2015, the Bardo and Sousse attacks in March and June killed dozens of people, mostly foreign tourists. The violence had a disastrous impact on Tunisian tourism, a vital industry to the country’s fragile economy. However, the security situation has now returned to normal, according to Tunisia’s Director of Tourism Afif Kchouk, and the country is looking forward to new customers.
Tunisian tourism professionals have diversified their services into areas including health and medical tourism. The country has high standards of healthcare allied with good tourism infrastructure. Amor Dehisy, president of the Professional Medical Tourism Association, said that medical tourism has huge potential in Africa, the Middle-East and Europe.
Tunisiebooking.com is one of the leading travel agencies in Tunisia. It plans to expand the business in North Africa. The company has 20 agencies throughout Tunisia and they will soon enter the Algerian market, according to Khaled Rojbi, tunisiebooking.com CEO.
In the 1960s, Tunisia was among the first Arab and African nations to develop its tourism sector, and tourism is the main source of foreign currency. Thousands of people lost their jobs when visitors deserted the country in 2015, but now Tunisians are very optimistic about the 2017 summer season.
