Swing over to golf, and tee-up a new partnership with the US based PGA Tour, and China's Shankai Sports. The new deal will see the top circuit in the world, venture into the world's most populous nation. The agreement will see the creation of the PGA Tour's China series, set to take place in China for a 20-year period, starting next year.
The signing ceremony occurred in Beijing, and comes at an interesting time, as the Chinese government forced the closure of more than 100 courses in an effort to conserve water and land. Greg Gilligan, the PGA Tour's Greater China managing director, claims they are related to code violations and that China is still supportive of the sport. After a one-year hiatus, the PGA Tour China Series will resume next year. Shankai Sports, the firm behind the sponsorship says its new venture is receiving a 45-million US dollars investment from Yao Capital, a private equity firm co-founded by former Houston Rockets player Yao Ming, and US-based IDG Capital.
