Jianbingguozi is China’s take on crepe. The flattened pancake is topped with sausages, spring onions, fried bread sticks and sticky soy sauce before being folded several times and served. /CFP Photo
The pancake is a popular street food item for those living in the northern part of the country thanks to its crispy taste and cheap price, selling at 5 to 10 yuan (70 cents to 1.5 US dollars) a piece. /CFP Photo
On Sunday, the craftsmanship of making Jianbingguozi made it to the list of intangible cultural heritage in Tianjin, a port city in north China. Only three families in the city have succeeded in preserving their traditional secret recipes of making the delicious pancake and passing it down through generations. /CFP Photo
Jianbingguozi now joins dumplings, fried dough twist (or muhua in Chinese) and fried rice cakes as Tianjin’s fourth must-try food. /CFP Photo
A total of 76 items were part of the newly released intangible cultural heritage list, the fourth such listing issued by the local government in Tianjin, and included traditional music and other skills such as acupuncture. /CFP Photo
