One year after the Zika virus swept through the Americas and Southeast Asia, the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention has released a detailed report, indicating which countries and territories have been hit by the disease.
According to the report, more than 50 areas in North and South America reported Zika infections in 2016, and in Asia, nine Pacific islands and Singapore were hit by the virus last year. The island of Cape Verde is the only country that currently has a Zika virus travel warning.
The Zika virus was first identified in Uganda in 1947 in monkeys, and was later identified in humans in 1952. The first large outbreak of the disease caused by Zika infection was reported on the Island of Yap in 2007.
