Chinese volunteers have been working side by side with clean-up crews in Yongji county, northeast China’s Jilin Province, after violent rainstorms destroyed hundreds of homes and farms. Cleaning sludge from streets, residences, and government buildings is a top priority. Severely-crippled public facilities, including power and water supplies, as well as the county’s only public hospital and railway, are also under repair.

Having experienced the two nightmare storms within just one week, thousands of evacuees still have lingering fears as they work to restore their devastated homes.

CGTN’s Yang Jinghao reported that no more rainstorms are expected in the following days, so people in Yongji county can begin to catch their breath now. Residents say they are grateful for the rescue efforts, but what they really want is improvements to local infrastructure, so that they can withstand frequent floods.
