On the Belt and Road: Chinese live-streaming app boosts cross-cultural exchanges in Egypt
[]
We turn to the internet industry. Uplive is now the leading live streaming platform in Egypt. It was developed by Beijing-based Asia Innovations Group. The Chinese app is bringing Asia's live-streaming frenzy to Egypt, while building a bridge for cross-cultural communication. CGTN's Jiang Shaoyi reports.
It's not a date. But it's somehow, equally important.
MAHA BOGHADAY LIVE STREAMER "If I haven't opened it for a while I feel like something is missing, something very important is missing."
What 26-year old Maha is obsessed with, is this Chinese live streaming platform called Uplive. And the app has made her an online star. She now has over 100 thousand followers.
MAHA BOGHADAY LIVE STREAMER "Uplive has almost become my entire life. I feel like it's a part of me and I'm naturally entering to speak to my friends, as if I'm meeting them and going out with them on a daily basis."
After graduating about 4 years ago, Maha now works as a presenter at a local radio station in Cairo. Live coverage in front of lots people. She said going live is very similar to her media career. The only extra thing is that every day and every hour she gets to meet someone new, and that excites her a lot.
From cooking to guitar classes, online live streamers can document their every move through this channel. And they are making money from it, by receiving adorable virtual gifts from their viewers. Maha said that in one month, she earned 800 dollars, almost double her monthly income as a radio presenter.
JING WEIWEI, CEO ASIA INNOVATIONS GROUP MIDDLE EAST "The design of all our events, products, and virtual gifts are based on the preferences and customs of locals. We take into consideration the elements of local characteristics, such as Muslim and Arabic culture."
JIANG SHAOYI CAIRO "Wow! Someone just sent me a gift, a pyramid. Thanks so much. Uplive is now taking the country by storm. Every day about 60 thousand streamers are broadcasting on the platform around the world, 3,000 of them are from the Middle East, just like Maha. With a substantial growth in its viewers, the Chinese company is chasing to cash in on the Middle East's growing appetite for live streaming."
Over the past few months, Uplive has been among the most popular apps downloaded on the Apple and Android app stores. But the company is not satisfied, and is aiming at something bigger----they are trying to help Egyptians understand more about China than just "Made in China".
JING WEIWEI, CEO ASIA INNOVATIONS GROUP MIDDLE EAST "Our short-term target is to become the healthiest and largest live-streaming platform in the industry, and then we will expand our businesses, especially those related to cross-cultural communications. The people-to-people exchanges between China and Egypt are very frequent now, no matter in terms of cultural interactions or in tourism. We hope we can become that bridge between the people of the 2 countries."
Uplive is now also providing services in other countries such as Japan, Vietnam and Russia. Whilst it's widening its doors to help more people from different cultures meet over their cell-phones. JIANG SHAOYI, CGTN, CAIRO, EGYPT.
