US Attorney General Jeff Sessions faced a heavy backlash from Donald Trump over his handling of an investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 election, on the same day that the lawmakers voted to impose tougher sanctions on the Kremlin.

Sessions recused himself from the Russia probe after it was revealed he had met with Russia’s ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak, twice during the election year.

“I am disappointed in the attorney general,” Trump said at a Rose Garden appearance with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri. "Time will tell. Time will tell.”

When asked twice whether Sessions' job is safe and what he can do to preserve it, Trump declined to call on the attorney general to resign.
