The DPRK's decision to attend the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games is regarded as sports diplomacy. Let's take a look at previous instances between the DPRK and South Korea.
In 2002, DPRK athletes attended the Asian Games in Busan, South Korea. Athletes from the two countries conducted a joint march at the opening and closing ceremonies.
In 2005, the DPRK was represented at the Asian Athletics Championships in Incheon, South Korea. Included in the cheering squad was Ri Sol Ju, who is now the wife of DPRK leader Kim Jong Un.
In 2014, at the closing event of the Asian Games, three top DPRK officials made a surprise visit and held the first high-level face-to-face talks with South Korea in five years.
In 2017, the DPRK's women's ice hockey team came to the South to participate in the world championships. And the South Korean national women's soccer team travelled to the DPRK for an Asian Cup qualifying match.
