And we also hear from Lu li'an, a CPC congressional delegate born and raised in Taiwan. Lu rose to fame after publicly addressing the often fraught cross-strait relations, which have been especially strained since the pro-independence Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen took office last May. And Lu said she had taken the initiative to join the Communist Party of China, just to make that relationship right.
She was known for taking the hostile question.
Reporter: You're a CPC member, can you still love Taiwan?
LU LI'AN CPC CONGRESS DELEGATE "We are now living in 2017, not 70 years ago. We should let go of those confrontational ideologies. We should be able to love Taiwan and love the motherland at the same time."
Repeating the message in the local Taiwan tongue. Her answer made her a darling for those who wish the best for cross-strait relations. Lu would tell CGTN that it has always been her hope to better the ties, but it took her years to finally find the right way.
She was Shanghai's first professor of English from Taiwan when she joined the prestigious Fudan university twenty years ago. A political at first. But she gradually found that she had to make her voice heard.
LU LI'AN CPC CONGRESS DELEGATE I watched a lot of TV period dramas about the Communist Party of China and KMT fighting with one another. You can't have peace between the two when you see so much fighting on TV so often, right? I want to change that.
She sent a proposition to the city. And taking the initiative to have a say in things she cares about, has led her to the Communist Party of China.
LU LI'AN CPC CONGRESS DELEGATE If you want to engage with the society you live in and make it better, you should take part in it. And by being a CPC member, you have a better chance to influence others.
