Saturday was the first day of the holy month of Ramadan for the Muslim faithful around the world.
Throughout this period, Muslims will pray, fast and recite the Quran, as they renew their relationship with God.
Somalia being one of the countries with a wide following of Islam, many residents gathered in market places in preparation for the celebrations. Businessmen took advantage of Ramadan to make profits, as they tried to meet demand from the increased customers.

Ahmed Osman Wehlie, a trader in Mogadishu, told CGTN Africa that he hoped Ramadan could inspire Somalis to work towards peace and prosperity in the country.
"For the sake of the holy month of Ramadan, I hope for prosperity for the Somali people. I want my people to forgive each other, and I would like those harming us to stop it."
"Our Somali youth, please stop emigrating; your country can offer good opportunities, and you can take advantage of your country's products.”
